Message from the Principal

Welcome to Monterey!

I am Erika Tunson, your principal, and I am honored to serve this incredible school community. Before becoming principal, I spent six years as the assistant principal here at Monterey, and I can truly say I love working at this school! Over the past few years, Monterey has transformed from good to great, and I am proud of the progress we’ve made together.

I am no stranger to Harrison School District 2—I am beginning my 30th year in the district! After teaching for seventeen years and serving at the district level for several years, I joined Monterey, where I’ve had the privilege of witnessing the lasting impact of education. One of my greatest joys is supervising a teacher who was once my second-grade student—a powerful reminder of how teachers, staff, and families can make a lifelong difference in the lives of our students.

At Monterey, we are dedicated to our mission: to educate with purpose, inspire with passion, and empower students to make a meaningful impact in their communities and beyond. Our vision is simple yet powerful: Educate, Inspire, Impact. Every member of our staff lives this mission every day.
